In 2018, Ferris Coin & Jewelry Co. held a nation-wide contest to design a silver medal commemorating African American WWI hero Sgt. Henry Johnson. An expert jury composed of esteemed professional artists and a representative of the 369th Veteran’s Association (the regiment Johnson served with) selected the obverse and reverse designs by U.S. Mint Artist Chris Costello.
Ferris Coin & Jewelry Co. donated 10 low-serial number medals to be awarded each year to the winner of the Henry Johnson Award for Distinguished Community Service starting with Jahkeen Hoke, the 2018 recipient. The remaining medals from this limited 500-mintage are available for purchase exclusively at our 199 Wolf Road shop and online store.
